Inca Trail 4-Day Hike to Machu Picchu from KM 82 of Ollantaytambo

Day 1: Ollantaytambo to Wayllabamba

  • 6:00 AM : Meet at KM 82 of Ollantaytambo for the start of your trek.
  • Hike Begins: Begin your hike along the Urubamba River. The trail initially follows a relatively flat path, allowing you to warm up and take in views of the snow-capped Veronica Peak.
  • Llactapata Ruins: Visit the archaeological site of Llactapata, an ancient Incan settlement. Your guide will provide insights into the historical significance of the ruins.
  • Lunch: Enjoy a nutritious lunch prepared by the trekking team in a scenic location.
  • Afternoon Trek: Continue through lush valleys and gradually ascend towards Wayllabamba. The trail passes through various microclimates, offering diverse flora and fauna.

Day 2: Wayllabamba to Pacaymayo

  • Early Morning: Start your day with a hearty breakfast. This is the most challenging day, featuring a steep ascent.
  • Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass): Begin the climb to the highest point of the trail at 4,215 meters (13,828 feet). The trek is strenuous but offers rewarding views.
  • Midway Rest: Take breaks as needed to rest and hydrate. Your guide will ensure a steady pace for all trekkers.
  • Lunch: Enjoy lunch after descending from the pass, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
  • Runkurakay Ruins: Visit the circular ruins of Runkurakay. Learn about their purpose and historical context.
  • Descent to Pacaymayo: Continue descending to the Pacaymayo Valley, where you’ll set up camp.

  • Sayacmarca Ruins: Explore the well-preserved ruins of Sayacmarca, a significant Incan site perched on a cliff.
  • Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a scenic spot along the trail.

Day 4: Wiñay Wayna to Machu Picchu

  • Early Morning: Rise early, have breakfast, and begin the final stretch of the trail.
  • Sun Gate (Inti Punku): Arrive at the Sun Gate, where you’ll get your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu as the sun rises over the ancient citadel.
  • Descent to Machu Picchu: Walk down to the main site of Machu Picchu. Your guide will take you on a comprehensive tour of the site, explaining its history, architecture, and significance.
